Product photography is one of the most demanding categories for AI image generation β small errors are far more noticeable than in a stylized illustration. Here are the five mistakes we see most often.
1. No background description
Leaving the background undefined often produces cluttered or inconsistent results. Specify it explicitly: “seamless white cyclorama” or “soft studio gradient background.”
2. Skipping the negative prompt
Without one, you’ll get far more reflections, dust artifacts, and uneven lighting than necessary. Always include terms like “harsh reflections, dust, uneven lighting.”
3. Vague lighting
“Good lighting” means nothing to an AI model. “Soft diffused overhead lighting with a gentle reflection beneath the object” gives it something concrete to render.
4. Wrong aspect ratio for the platform
A 16:9 product shot cropped into a 1:1 Instagram post loses its composition. Match the ratio to where the image will be used β 1:1 for most e-commerce and social product posts.
5. Missing camera/lens detail
Terms like “100mm macro f/8” push the model toward a sharp, professional product-photography look instead of a flatter, illustrated rendering.
The fix
Every one of these is solved by using a fully structured prompt rather than a short description β exactly what you’ll find in our Product Photography category.
